What are the side effects of naltrexone?

Updated over a year ago

Most people tolerate naltrexone well, but like any medication, it can cause side effects. Common side effects include:

  • Nausea: This is the most frequently reported side effect and often subsides after the first week of use.

  • Headache: Some individuals experience mild to moderate headaches while on naltrexone.

  • Dizziness or light-headedness: This can happen, especially in the early stages of treatment.

  • Fatigue or drowsiness: Feeling tired is another common complaint, although this usually diminishes over time.

  • Irritability or mood swings: Some users report feeling more irritable or emotionally unstable.

More rarely, individuals may experience symptoms like depression or persistent fatigue. If side effects become severe or don’t go away, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider. In very rare cases, naltrexone can cause liver damage, especially in people who already have liver problems. Regular liver function tests may be recommended for individuals on long-term treatment.
