Can I take naltrexone if I’m pregnant or nursing?

Updated over a year ago

Naltrexone should only be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding if absolutely necessary, as there isn’t enough research to fully understand its safety for unborn babies or infants. Animal studies have shown some risk of fetal harm, but human studies are limited. For women who are pregnant or trying to conceive, the safest course is to consult their healthcare provider to weigh the risks and benefits. Given the harmful effects of alcohol during pregnancy, avoiding alcohol altogether is the safest choice. If treatment for alcohol dependence is needed, the healthcare provider may suggest other options.
